Challenges for Obama's National Security Council on space program.
America is staring down the humbling symmetry of China's space program trying to figure out what to do about its space program.
So here we are in 2009, with Obama's National Security Council heading up yet another re-examination of NASA priorities, with his new agency chief trying to make sense of the bureaucracy, with stubborn Congressmen cutting $650 million in funding because they think private industry "cannot substitute for the painful truth of failed performance at present." As if that headache wasn't enough, just when we thought the plan - killing the shuttle next year, returning to classic rocket launchers to send men back to the moon, and putting it all together for Mars and beyond had resurrected the ambitious trajectory NASA was forced to abandon in the early '70s, what do we face? Another Chinese red moon.
